U.S. Census Bureau data released Feb. 4 showed that new orders of manufactured goods — down four of the last five months — decreased 0.9% month-to-month during December to $578.5 billion, following a 0.8% decrease in November.
PMI Jumps to Expansion Territory for First Time in More than 2 Years (Feb. 3)
The Bureau’s latest report noted that December durable goods — also down four of the last five months — decreased 2.2% month-to-month, unchanged from the decrease issued in its advance report. This followed a 2.0% decrease in November,
Shipments — up following four consecutive monthly decreases — increased 0.9% month-to-month, unchanged from the previously published decrease. This followed a 0.3% decrease in November.

Unfilled orders — down following five consecutive monthly decreases — decreased 0.5% in December, unchanged from the previously published decrease. This followed a 0.2% increase in November.
December’s unfilled orders-to-shipments ratio was 6.93, down from November’s 7.06.
Inventories — up two consecutive months — increased 0.4% in December, unchanged from the previously published increase. This followed a 0.5% increase in November.
