April Construction Production Increases in Europe

Production in the construction sector grew by 0.3 percent in EA19 and remained stable in EU28.

Compared with March, April seasonally adjusted production in the construction sector increased by 0.3 percent in the euro area (EA19) and remained stable in the EU28, according to first estimates from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In March 2017, production in construction fell by 1.1 percent in the euro area and by 0.5 percent in the EU28.

In April 2017 compared with April 2016, production in construction grew by 3.2 percent in the euro area and by 2.7 percent in the EU28.

The increase of 0.3 percent in production in construction in the euro area in April 2017, compared with March 2017, is due to building construction rising by 0.7 percent, while civil engineering fell by 1.5 percent. In the EU28, the stable level of production in construction is due to building construction rising by 0.2 percent, while civil engineering fell by 1 percent.

Among Member States for which data are available, the largest increases in production in construction were recorded in Sweden (3.8 percent), France (3.5 percent) and the Czech Republic (1.6 percent), and the largest decreases in Romania (-7.7 percent), Italy (-4.1 percent) and Hungary (-2.6 percent).

The increase of 3.2 percent in production in construction in the euro area in April 2017, compared with April 2016, is due to building construction growing by 3.3 percent and civil engineering by 2.5 percent. In the EU28, the increase of 2.7 percent is due to civil engineering rising by 1 percent and building construction by 3.5 percent.

Among Member States for which data are available, the largest increases in production in construction were recorded in Slovenia (27.8 percent), Hungary (22 percent) and Sweden (19.8 percent). The largest decreases were in Romania (-18.4 percent), Italy (-4.6 percent) and the United Kingdom (-3.4 percent).
