WESCO International, Inc. (NYSE: WCC), Pittsburgh, PA, distributor of electrical and industrial MRO products, construction materials, and integrated supply procurement outsourcing services, reported sales for the first quarter ended March 31, 2010, were $1.14 billion, down 2.6 percent from the prior-year period.

Profit for the quarter was $21.7 million, down from $23.3 million from last year.
John J. Engel, WESCO's CEO, said: "Our sales and margin initiatives contributed favorably as we delivered solid results in the first quarter. After stabilizing the business in the second half of last year, it is encouraging to see improving momentum in early 2010 and a return to positive year-over-year sales growth late in the first quarter.
Engel said WESCO's industrial sales grew 13 percent in the quarter, and the distributor's construction backlog grew despite pressure in nonresidential construction and utility markets.
