Yesterday’s New York Times has an interview with Cardinal Health Chairman and CEO George S. Barrett. Cardinal started as a small food distributor in 1971 in Columbus, OH. Today it is a healthcare distribution business with nearly $100 billion in annual revenues and 30,000 employees.

The interview focuses on Barrett’s insights on leadership and qualities he looks for when hiring. His thoughts are useful regardless of company size in today’s environment, where every distributor has to look for the right fit for each position to move the company forward.
Here’s a sample of his remarks on leadership:
“People have to trust that you have a point of view about what this enterprise is going to look like. What do we seek to be? And they have to trust that you understand them, that you get them. Not necessarily that you know them personally, but you understand what it’s all about to work here and that you have their interests at heart. I think that when you can do those things, it can be a powerful combination.”
