MDM Survey: More Than Half of Respondents Using Social Media

In recent survey, MDM found while businesses are starting to use social media sites, they're not always sure what to do with them.

Let's face it. Being an early adopter isn't always the easiest position to be in. Sure you may become a leader, but you also are the first to have to overcome the obstacles. There's no one who has gone before you to tell you how to solve problems.

Social media has been no different. We recently asked our readers to take a short survey on the role social media plays in their businesses. What we learned was that while businesses are starting to appear on social media sites, they're not always sure what they're supposed to be doing there.

That doesn't mean no one has developed a strategy for social media. In fact, more than half of the survey respondents said they use social media in some way for business, with LinkedIn being the top choice.

So how are companies using social media for business? Specialty building materials C.H. Briggs is developing a YouTube channel for product demonstrations to complement its Facebook page where it makes product and event announcement. C.H. Briggs is developing a strategy for how to use Twitter, as well.

The No. 1 use for social media by survey respondents was creating another way to connect with customers, particularly younger customers who have grown up connected to the 'net. One respondent wrote: "We find it to be a good way to interact with our customers on their terms."

Respondents also said they use social media to:

  • Network with others in their field
  • Recruit new talent
  • Increase brand awareness
