Tip: Create Lifelong Learning Opportunities to Retain Millennials

Offering quality training and continuous development opportunities can help you retain millennial employees, says Dr. Barry Lawrence, program director of the industrial distribution program at Texas A&M University, in What Millennials Want.

Millennials often start looking elsewhere when they feel like there isn’t anything more to learn at that company, and that’s where employers lose them, he says.

Millennials want access to lifelong learning opportunities and a well-developed advancement path that rewards accomplishment and not just seniority, according to respondents to a recent MDM survey of students at industrial distribution and supply chain management programs.

Simply providing initial training upon hire is not enough to engage this learning-driven generation, says Lawrence. And an occasional seminar or speaker won't do the trick, either. Millennials desire the opportunity to continuously grow their skills and develop in their career.
