Advance: U.S. Durable Goods Orders Edge Higher in June, Up 6.7% YTD

U.S. durable goods orders increased 0.3% in June, led by computers and electronic products, while orders excluding transportation rose 0.6%. Total orders were up 8.9% year over year and 6.7% through the first half of 2026.

New orders for U.S.-manufactured durable goods increased 0.3% in June to a seasonally adjusted $334.8 billion, according to advance data released July 27 by the U.S. Census Bureau.

Orders have increased in three of the past four months. June’s gain followed a revised 4.0% decline in May, when volatile transportation equipment orders pulled the headline figure lower.

Excluding transportation equipment, June orders increased 0.6% from May. Orders excluding defense equipment rose 0.3%, while orders for manufacturers with unfilled orders increased 0.6%.

Computers and electronic products led the monthly increase, with orders rising 3.1%. Within that category, orders for communications equipment increased 0.7%, while computers and related products gained 0.2%.

Orders for primary metals increased 1.1%, and electrical equipment, appliances and components orders rose 0.9%. Meanwhile, fabricated metal products orders declined 0.5%, and machinery orders dipped 0.1%.

Transportation equipment orders decreased 0.2% overall. Nondefense aircraft and parts orders increased 3.7% following a 51.1% May decline, but remained down sharply from a year earlier. Motor vehicles and parts orders fell 0.6%, while defense aircraft and parts orders declined 7.2%.

Core capital goods orders — nondefense capital goods excluding aircraft, a closely watched indicator of business equipment investment — increased 0.9% in June. They were up 14.3% year over year and 9.3% during the first six months of 2026.

Overall durable goods orders were 8.9% higher than in June 2025 on a nonseasonally adjusted basis. Year-to-date orders increased 6.7%, with gains across most major product categories.
