Fort Wayne, IN-based hardware, lumber and building materials cooperative Do it Best Group plans to relocate True Value’s headquarters from Chicago to Fort Wayne, the company announced July 1.
The move brings True Value’s corporate base to the same city as Do it Best, which completed its acquisition of the retail-owned hardware store chain in November 2024 and has been based in Fort Wayne for decades. True Value will be based at Electric Works — the mixed-use redevelopment where Do it Best moved its own headquarters in late 2022.
“In our unique circumstances, it’s a very heavily teams-based environment, and having proximity and the ability to have people together for a critical decision-making body, it really is necessary in our space to do it that way, and it just works better,” Bo it Best CEO Dan Starr said in a news release. “Now it’s time to bring that all together. We will have one headquarters, and that will be in Fort Wayne.”
Do it Best acquired True Value after the Chicago-based company entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings in October 2024 to facilitate a sale. The transaction included True Value’s inventory, brand rights and paint manufacturing facilities, with True Value continuing to operate as a separate subsidiary of Do it Best.
At the time of the acquisition, Do it Best said the deal brought more than 4,500 independently owned True Value retailers under its umbrella, effectively doubling the size of its membership. The company said the deal created the world’s largest network of independent home improvement stores.
Do it Best’s True Value integration has included leadership and operational changes across the combined organization. The company previously named Nick Talarico as President of Do it Best and Dent Johnson as President of True Value, along with a broader True Value leadership team overseeing areas such as merchandising, marketing, logistics and distribution, finance, operations, supply chain and manufacturing.
The headquarters relocation further consolidates True Value’s corporate operations around Do it Best’s Fort Wayne base as the cooperative continues to integrate the legacy hardware brand and its retailer network.
Do it Best Group describes itself as a hardware, lumber and building materials buying cooperative in the home improvement industry, supporting independently owned locations across the United States and in more than 60 countries.
