Employee-owned electrical and automation distributor Van Meter has begun a major expansion and automation project at its regional distribution center in Cottage Grove, MN, adding 124,000 square feet to the facility as part of a long-term growth strategy.

The multiyear project will increase the facility’s total footprint to 315,000 square feet and incorporate Hai Robotics automation technology to improve scalability and operational efficiency. Construction and automation implementation are expected to continue through 2027, with full operational transition planned for 2028.

“This expansion is about building capacity with purpose,” Van Meter COO Nate Jensema said in the company announcement. “By combining additional space with intelligent automation, we’re creating a more efficient, scalable operation that supports our customers today while preparing us for what’s next. Just as importantly, we’re doing this in a way that maintains service continuity and enhances the daily experience for our employee-owners.”

Cedar Rapids, IA-based Van Meter distributes electrical supplies, automation products and related services across the Midwest. The company serves contractors, industrial customers and utilities through a network of locations.

Van Meter currently operates two Cottage Grove facilities and employs about 205 people there. The expansion will consolidate inventory management, order fulfillment and wire and cable processing operations into one location.

CEO Lura McBride said the investment reflects Van Meter’s long-term approach as an employee-owned company: “This project represents a significant milestone for Van Meter and our confidence in the future. As an employee-owned company, we think in generations, not quarters. This investment reflects our commitment to our people, our customers, and the communities we serve — ensuring we’re well positioned to grow responsibly and deliver exceptional value for decades to come.”
