Stock Building Supply to Open New Facility

Stock Building Supply, Raleigh, NC, a supplier of building materials and construction services, will open its newest facility in Yorktown, VA, on March 3, 2008. This 10,500 square-foot facility features local inventories of Architectural Doors, Frames and Finish Hardware and a Rated Hollow Metal Shop.

IDG Sees Synergies with Other Platinum Equity Companies

Industrial Distribution Group, Atlanta, GA, which agreed to be purchased by private equity group Platinum Equity, commented briefly on the coming transaction in a conference call with analysts:
 
Platinum Equity already owns two distribution service-oriented companies -Strategic Distribution Inc. and Ryerson Inc. -that are involved in similar or related businesses to Industrial Distribution Group. We believe there are natural fits and potential synergies within Platinum Equity, and we look forward to discussing those with Platinum Equity and the management teams of their individual businesses," CEO Charlie Lingenfelter said today.

IDG Sales Down 2% to $537M in 2007

Industrial Distribution Group, Inc., Atlanta, GA, which has just agreed to be purchased by Platinum Equity, reported sales for 2007 were $537.5 million, compared with $547.9 million in 2006. Profit was $4.1 million, compared with $6.8 million last year.

Despite challenging conditions in key markets, including auto manufacturing, manufactured housing and the RV industry, I'm obviously not satisfied with this level of sales growth. I believe there are opportunities to improve the growth rate, as a result of our new organizational structure, our IT systems and process improvements we've made over the past couple of years," CEO Charlie Lingenfelter said in a conference call with analysts.

Durable Goods Orders Fall 5.3% in January

New orders for manufactured durable goods in January decreased $12 billion or 5.3 percent to $212.8 billion, the U.S. Census Bureau announced. This decrease followed two consecutive monthly increases including a 4.4 percent December increase. Excluding transportation, new orders decreased 1.6 percent. Excluding defense, new orders decreased 4.7 percent.

Shipments
Shipments of manufactured durable goods in January, up following two consecutive monthly decreases, increased $3.8 billion or 1.8 percent to $215.5 billion. This followed a 0.4 percent December decrease.

Electroindustry Confidence Index Lags in February

NEMA's Electroindustry Business Confidence Index for current North American conditions lagged the 50-point threshold, which is indicative of industry expansion, for a third straight month in February. Still, the index gained ground in absolute terms, climbing nearly 12 points to 41.7 from 30 a month ago.

Meanwhile, the mean degree of change in current North American business conditions climbed to -0.1 in February from a reading of -0.8 in January (on a scale ranging from -5 [deteriorated significantly] through 0 [stayed the same] to +5 [improved significantly]).

Home Depot Reports 2007 Sales Fell 2.1%

The Home Depot, Atlanta, GA, reported sales of $77.3 billion, down 2.1% from fiscal 2006. Comparable store sales for the year fell 6.7%.
 
This was a difficult year financially, but I believe the progress we made on our key priorities set the foundation for the long-term health of our company," said CEO Frank Blake. "We see the home improvement market in 2008 as challenging, but we are going to continue to focus on our five priorities and build on the progress we made in 2007."

Wholesale Prices Rise 1% in January

The Producer Price Index for Finished Goods rose 1.0 percent in January, seasonally adjusted, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported. This increase followed a decline of 0.3 percent in December and a 2.6-percent advance in November. At the earlier stages of processing, prices for intermediate goods moved up 1.4 percent after falling 0.2 percent in the prior month, and the crude goods index increased 2.5 percent following a 1.1-percent advance in December.

Canadian Machinery/Equipment Price Index Down 3.3% in 4Q

The Canadian Machinery and Equipment Price Index stood at 83.8 (1997=100) in the fourth quarter, down 3.3% from the third quarter. The import component index fell 5.1%, while the domestic index edged down 0.5%. Compared with the fourth quarter of 2006, the total MEPI was down 8.1%, as the import index decreased 12.3% while the domestic index edged down 0.8%.

All industries recorded decreases in prices of machinery and equipment purchased in the fourth quarter. Manufacturing industries (-3.9%) contributed the most to the total MEPI quarterly decrease.

Eaton Buys Most of Phoenixtec Power Company

Diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton Corp., Cleveland, OH, has acquired 91% of Phoenixtec Power Company Ltd., a company listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange.

Assuming all outstanding shares are ultimately acquired, Eaton expects to pay a total purchase price, net of cash and debt on Dec. 31, 2007, of $568 million for Phoenixtec.

Phoenixtec manufactures single- and three-phase uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems that are sold globally. Phoenixtec has positions in China, Southeast Asia and Eastern Europe. Based in Taipei, the company has manufacturing facilities in China and Taiwan, and employs 5,800 people.

Report: Grainger Plans Meeting with Justice Dept.

At the Reuters Manufacturing Summit (Click Here for Reuters' full coverage), Grainger told participants that it plans to meet with the U.S. Justice Department to discuss allegations it has overcharged the government.
 
President James Ryan said that Grainger is in full compliance with its contracts with the government and will meet with officials sometime in the next month.

Global distributor Bunzl plc announced its sales for the year ended Dec. 31, 2007, were £3,581.9 million (US$7,061 million at current exchange rates), up 12% at constant exchange rates.

Building Permits
Privately-owned housing units authorized by building permits in January were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,048,000. This is 3.0 percent below the revised December rate of 1,080,000 and is 33.1 percent below the revised January 2007 estimate of 1,566,000.
 
Single-family authorizations in January were at a rate of 673,000; this is 4.1 percent below the December figure of 702,000. Authorizations of units in buildings with five units or more were at a rate of 336,000 in January.

Home Channel News reports that hardlines distributor Orgill, the Memphis, TN, plans to build two distribution centers to serve the Midwest and Pacific Northwest in the U.S.

RONA Grows 5.1% in 2007

Retailer and distributor of hardware, renovation and gardening products RONA Inc., Boucherville, Quebec, reported sales increased 5.1% to $4.8 billion in 2007, and profit was down 2.9% to $185.1 million.
