The Home Depot said Aug. 12 that Chairman, President and CEO Ted Decker will take a temporary medical leave of absence, with the company expecting him to return within the next few months.
Home Depot did not provide further details about Decker’s medical condition.
During his absence, two longtime Home Depot executives will oversee the office of the CEO. Senior Executive Vice President Ann-Marie Campbell will oversee day-to-day operations, while EVP and CFO Richard McPhail will oversee financial management and the company’s Pro subsidiaries. Independent Lead Director Greg Brenneman will chair the board during Decker’s leave.
The leadership change comes less than two weeks after Home Depot announced an organizational realignment designed in large part to accelerate growth with professional contractors — a customer segment that increasingly puts the retailer in competition with traditional distributors.
That July 30 realignment converted Home Depot’s Office of Integration into an Office of Pro Acceleration, led by McPhail. The group is tasked with coordinating Home Depot Pro, HD Supply, SRS Distribution and Construction Resources while developing shared capabilities such as customer relationship management, a common product catalog and optimized fulfillment.
Home Depot estimated its Pro total addressable market at about $700 billion. Its contractor-focused ecosystem includes more than 2,360 retail stores, approximately 1,300 distribution branches, 325 customer-facing warehouses and about 16,000 delivery assets.
The company’s distribution footprint has expanded substantially in recent years. Home Depot acquired SRS for $18.25 billion in 2024, and SRS added building products distributor GMS in a $5.5 billion deal completed in September 2025. Home Depot’s push into distribution dates back further, including its 2015 acquisition of MRO distributor Interline Brands.
Home Depot is scheduled to report its fiscal 2026 second-quarter financial results Aug. 18.
