The Home Depot is doubling down on its professional contractor business with a new suite of AI-enabled and digital project tools available to its Pro Xtra members — a broader move that further blurs the line between retail and distribution for a customer base that overlaps heavily with industrial distributors.

Detailed in a March 18 news release, the updates are designed to help Pros more efficiently manage projects by improving how they build material lists, place orders and coordinate deliveries. The company said the new tools leverage artificial intelligence to streamline workflows and reduce time spent on administrative tasks.

New Pro-focused capabilities include:

Project Planning: allows Pros to organize large jobs with personalized delivery preferences, preferred pricing and inventory visibility. Pros have access to the majority of HD’s product assortment within the Project Planning tool, including millions of items available in stores and fulfillment centers. Material List Builder AI — launched in January — integrates directly with the Project Planning tool, which interprets project intent to generate actionable material lists in seconds.

Real-Time Delivery Tracking: Announced March 5 as a new offering, Pros can now track down-to-the-minute delivery of big and bulky materials like concrete, drywall and lumber.

Complex Order Scheduling: Pros can schedule and manage deliveries even when items are coming from multiple locations, ensuring materials reach the jobsite based on availability.

Purchase History: ongoing enhancements to purchase history that will allow for easy organization and search of previous orders and receipts, making reconciliation much simpler for Pros.

Shared Access: allows Pros to maintain oversight while empowering their teams with customizable permissions to help keep projects moving and focus on growing their business. Pros can also collaborate directly with their HD Pro team within the site for support and expertise on product selection.

This Pro digital workspace is available for free to all Home Depot Pro Xtra members online or within its app. Those members also get personalized pricing and custom rewards.

The company said these updates build on its existing Pro-focused platform and reflect continued demand for digital solutions that simplify project management and procurement.

MDM Analysis

Home Depot’s Pro segment — which includes a wide range of trade professionals — remains a key focus area for the company, with ongoing investments in technology, supply chain and service capabilities to support this customer base. That segment now represents nearly half of total revenue, underscoring its importance as a growth engine.

In terms of wallet share, integrating AI into front-end workflows like material list creation and project planning fosters less contractor buyer friction and captures a greater portion of project spend before orders ever reach traditional distributors.
